Why does my dog itch?

Dogs itch for a variety of reasons & can suffer with a variety of skin conditions. Some dogs suffer for parts of the year; for example seasonal itching due to pollen allergies and others may suffer all year round. It is sometimes not a simple task to be able to get to the bottom of the actual causes for itchy skin.

Seeking a veterinary diagnosis may be required to ensure that your dog isn’t suffering with a condition requiring immediate vet intervention. This may include but not exclusively; if your dog is suffering from a skin infection requiring antibiotics or experiencing an allergic reaction which requires additional support to manage. However, often when a vet sees a dog with pruritus (itching) it can be very hard to get a definitive diagnosis and may require a ‘trial and error’ approach to treating the itching & find a solution that suits and helps your pet.

Usually the first thing to look at to help your dog’s skin condition would be diet. Changing your dog’s diet will not only help your dog’s skin but will also help with other areas of health and wellbeing.

It is also useful to consider when thinking about medications, the potential implications that may have on your pet’s long term health and the known side effects. It is sensible to weigh up these options before agreeing a course of drugs.

Often we find that the most effective way to improve your pet’s skin condition is with the aid of high quality natural products whether that be topical creams and or supplements. Often these products have little to no side effects and can help alleviate the symptoms your pet may be experiencing effectively.

Why not have a look at our information pages for a more in-depth look at specific conditions.
